Built in 1931, The Texas Theatre entered the public consciousness on November 22, 1963, when Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested there after he allegedly assassinated John F. Kennedy.
United Artists, which would later purchase the theater, used it as an office and storage facility beginning in the 1980s. A 1995 fire nearly destroyed it, but it reopened briefly by showing Spanish-language movies. It failed to succeed, and it closed its doors soon after. The Oak Cliff Foundation purchased the building in 2001 and began to renovate it. It reopened in 2010 under the oversight of Aviation Cinemas.
